CHRONICLE BUREAU IMPHAL, 14th May: Chajing FC and Langol FC battled their way into the semifinals of the Challenge Cup Veterans’ Football Tournament as both teams got the better of their opponents on penalties in the Monday’s quarterfinal fixtures.
Chajing FC came from behind to force a 1-1 draw against VSO Tekcham in regulation time and went on to prevail in their penalty contest.
In the shootout, Chajing delivered on seven of their 11 attempts as S Budha, N Gandhi, Kh Hemo, M Chandrakanta, W Robin, N Sagar and S Noren all converted their shots to send their side straight to the last four. VSO, on the other hand, could only score four goals through M Sanjay, W Ibomcha, Kh Sanjeet and P Brojendro to be on the losing side.
Earlier, M Sanjai put VSO ahead in the 29th minute only to be cancelled out by Kh Hemo’s 38th-minute strike, paving the way for the spot kicks where Changjing showed nerves of steel to overcome the Tekcham side.
Langol FC too settled their quarterfinal match against FVT Toubungkhoh on penalties where they emerged 9-6 winners after both sides locked in a 1-1 deadlock.
It was a tight battle during regulation time as Langol stole a march after 41 minutes of back-and-forth exchanges when K Samayai scored for his team. But FVT fought their way back into contention with a 55th-minute equaliser by W Rajesh.
After their 1-1 stalemate, the penalty kicks ensued as Bijoykumar, Angousana, Dhananjoy, Brojen, Jotin, Binod, Sanayai and Sanahal all hit the back of the net to help their side join Chajing FC in the last four. For FVT, Lolendro, Debachandra, Binanta, Lolen, Rajen and Noren scored in a losing cause.
