CHRONICLE BUREAU
IMPHAL, 11th June: Surjakanta’s heroics steered United Chikim Federation to a comfortable 4-1 victory over New Lamka YC in their quarterfinal encounter at the Raja Goukhothang Guite Football Memorium on Monday at Lamka Public Ground, Churachandpur.
Flashes of brilliance by Surjakanta earned him four goals and his stunning salvo helped United Chikim storm past their opponents into the semifinals.
The Chikim squad needed 20 minutes from kickoff to break New Lamka YC’s resistance as Surjakanta registered his first shot on goal with a fine effort that gave his side a 1-0 advantage through the first-half exchanges.
United Chikim showed greater intent after the restart with a flurry of attacks that saw the New Lamka defence wilt under pressure as Surjakanta was unstoppable inside the goalmouth.
The prolific striker’s second goal came in the 55th minute and then he tripled his haul in the 72nd minute before the Lamka side pulled one back in the 77th minute through Phungtanlian whose goal eventually proved to be his team’s only goal of the game.
Towards the end of the match, Surjakanta was at it again as he wrapped up his four-goal haul with a superb 84th-minute strike to see United Chikim Federation close out the game in dominant fashion.
