Human chain formed demanding justice in MSF VP’s death
IMPHAL, 9th July: Students of various schools situated along Canchipur road here formed a human chain on Monday in protest against the alleged failure of the state government to arrest those involved in the hit and run case that led to the death of Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) vice president Ningthoujam Jugeshwar. Students of Dineshwori Higher Secondary School, Imphal Public School (IPS) and International School of Resources (ISOR) formed the human chain along the road and shouted various slogans demanding justice to the victim, arrest of the culprit(s), etc.
Speaking to the media on the side-lines of the protest, MSF general secretary Okendro Heisnam questioned inability of the government to identity the people involved in the death of Jugeshwar and asked if the accused were associated with the government.
Both the government and the police are regarding the death of Jugeshwar as a case of simple accident. Even the SIT formed to investigate the death has been doing nothing indicating serious security lapses in the Manipur Police department. As such, one cannot help but wonder if the life of the common people does not hold much value to the government, the general secretary remarked.
The state government has publicised that CCTV cameras have been installed in and around Imphal City but it has been unable to produce any footage with regard to the hit and run case. Thus, the state government must produce the culprits as soon as possible, Okendro stated, while adding that the student unions and the JAC will continue to agitate until justice is served.
