Zeliangrong bodies demand action against NSCN-IM
IMPHAL5th Aug: Alleging arbitrary detention and harassment of youth and student leaders by NSCN/GPRN, Zeliangrong civil organisations have petitioned the Central and state governments to take up immediate suitable actions against the perpetrators failing which it threatened to launch intense agitations.
In their memorandums addressed to the Union home minister and the chief minister of Manipur, the Zeliangrong civil organisations set 72-hour deadline, effective from August 5 midnight, for booking the cadres and functionaries of ‘NSCN/GPRN (IM) who were involved in the abduction of the youth and student leaders from Tamenglong district headquarters.
The joint representation submitted on Friday mentioned that the abductions were carried out under the directive of the outfit’s Zeilad Region’ central administrative officer (CAO) Sangailung Kamei with the assistance of deputy kilonser Thailik alias Joel and Capt Khangdi of the NSCN/GPRN (IM). The joint representation contended that the abductees were detained in the house of one Aduana Kamei, who is also a functionary of NSCN/GPRN (IM), at Tamenglong town.
It identified those who were held captives by the outfit as Ngankiuwang Kamei (newly elected assistant secretary of ZSUTD), vice-president of ZYF (AMN) David Kamei, former ZSUTD coordinator Mathiusang Panmei, ZSUM vice-president Wiramang Newmai, former ZSUM vice-president ID Chunlubou, and Jeremiah Gangmei (newly elected ZSUTD coordinator). The said persons were released only when state and central forces intervened and rescued them, the memo maintained and conveyed appreciation to the security forces for their timely action.
“It is pertinent to mention that the armed cadres of the NSCN/GPRN (IM) caused mental harassment to the student leaders who had gone to conduct the election of Zeliangrong Students’ Union Tamenglong District (ZSUTD) on August 3, 2018 at the Circuit House, Tamenglong HQ. The armed cadres also warned that strong action would be taken up in case election of the said Union was conducted. Is it not a shameful act for the group which is negotiating with the Govt. of India to meddle in such election,” the representation posed.
Further stating that the NSCN/GPRN (IM), which is engaging in peaceful political negotiation with the Government of India, indulging in such criminal and anti-social activities is highly condemnable, it also noted with regret that subjecting leaders of students and civil organisations to such harassment will be detrimental to the people’s yearning for peace and tranquillity in the region.
As such interferences and subjugation of rights of the citizens to live in peace is unwarranted, the government of India should take up appropriate action against those cadres and functionaries who were involved in the abduction within the dateline mentioned above, the memorandum said.
It also cautioned that in the event of failure to book those NSCN/GPRN (IM) cadres and functionaries by the Centre within the specified dateline then the Zeliangrong civil societies shall be compelled to resort to various kinds of democratic agitations in collaboration with other likeminded civil societies in order to save life and ensure security of the citizens, said a statement issued by ZSUM state secretary Heurang Newme.
