Chaos in court as mob tries to assault rape accused
IMPHAL,1st Sep: Chaos broke out at Cheirap Court complex on Saturday as enraged people tried to lay their hands on Abujam Tombisana, owner of a Boarding cum Coaching Centre who has been accused of raping a minor girl at his boarding, while he was being produced in the Court. Accused Abujam Tombisana (45), s/o (L) Thambal of Samurou Awang Leikai allegedly raped a`15-year old girl who had been staying in the Boarding cum Coaching Centre for HSLC preparation on March 13 this year at around 3.30 am. Tombisana reportedly threatened the girl not to disclose the matter in case she wanted to pass the HSLC examination.
However, the girl told her parents everything about Tombisana's beastly act on August 28, following which a complaint was filed at Wangoi Police station. The police subsequently arrested Tombisana and produced him before the Duty Officer on August 29, before being remanded to police custody till date. On Saturday, IO of the case told the Court that legal medical examination of the rape victim had already been conducted at RIMS Forensic Science (Rape) and prayed that the accused be remanded to police custody for four more days for further interrogation. The Court accepted the prayer and remanded Tombisana in police custody.
Meanwhile, after learning that Tombisana was to be produced before the Special Court POCSO Imphal West at Cheirap Court on Saturday, enraged people from the victim’s locality stormed the court and tried to attack the accused. However, police were able to contain the situation from getting worse and made the crowd to stay outside the Court’s main entrance gate. However, as Tombisana was being transported from the court complex in a bulletproof police vehicle, the infuriated crowd blocked the vehicle from leaving and tried to attack Tombisana again their bid was foiled by the police personnel.
During the brief scuffle that ensued, the victim’s mother, who was also present at the scene, lost consciousness. The enraged protesters also shouted various slogans demanding that most stringent form of punishment be awarded to Tombisana.
Later, after returning from the court, the furious locals destroyed the two Boarding cum Coaching Centres owned by Abujam Tombisana located at Samurou Awang Leikai using an excavator (JCB). The establishments, one newly constructed makeshift out-house and a concrete building, were razed to the ground. However, a large of number of police personnel rushed to the area and prevented the people from doing any more damage.
Meanwhile, AMSU Women Wing convener Nongthombam Bidyarani and MACR assistant state co-ordinator Anoubam Somajsu came to the spot and met the victim’s family.
