AMWJU protests Govt bid to gag media freedom
IMPHAL1st Sep: Responding to the call of Indian Journalists’ Union (IJU) to hold a nationwide protest against the government’s move to suppress media freedom, members of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) on Saturday staged a sit-in-protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall here.
During the sit-in-protest, union secretary general S Nanda Singh informed the gathering that the national executive meeting of IJU held on August 18 and 19 at New Delhi resolved to stage nationwide demonstration/protest on September 1 by journalists affiliated to IJU to denounce increasing incidences of harassing journalists for critical writing and suppression of media houses by the both Central and state governments. In endorsement of the IJU’s clarion call and extending solidarity to Indian journalists, AMWJU too recently resolved to hold the sit-in-demonstration on Saturday, he said.
Around 150 members of AMWJU and persons working in media houses took part in the protest during which placards inscribed with slogans like, ‘Don’t Attack Media Freedom’, ‘Stop Intolerance by Central & State Governments’, ‘Implement Majithia Wage Board’, ‘Restore Autonomy of PCI’, ‘Include Unions in Accreditation Committee’, ‘Journalism is not a crime’, ‘Attack on media is attack on Democracy’, etc., were used.
