Ex-CM Ibobi blames BJP Govts for MU mess

STAFF REPORTER
IMPHAL,3rd Sep: Former Chief Minister O Ibobi has stated that the declaration made by VC AP Pandey on re-assuming his charge as the VC and banning two associations of MU is an act of disrespect towards the people of the state by the BJP government at both the centre and in the state.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan here on Monday, Ibobi recalled that an MoA was signed with the protesters with the knowledge of the Chief Minster and the Governor of Manipur, wherein it was decided that a team led by a retired Chief Justice would look into the charges levelled against VC Pandey and that he would be on leave until the enquiry is completed.

However, on September 1, Pandey issued a notice stating that he had assumed charge of VC and banned two core organisations that were part of the protests against him, he added. Questioning if Pandey received an order from the Ministry concerned allowing him to assume charge again; the former CM said that the VC must clarify if he had banned the organisations after consulting with the Ministry or not. He then maintained that such acts in reality shows the ‘devil-may-care’ attitude of both the central and state governments by imposing a state of emergency without actually announcing it.

Contending that the Congress party would continue to support all protests undertaken by the MU community, he recounted that MU was upgraded to a central university by the then UPA government, after being apprised of the varsity’s dire financial conditions. Although it was hoped that the BJP government would do something worthy for the University after PM Modi himself came to take part in the recent Indian Science Congress, it seems the government is adamant to make the university disappear, Ibobi observed.

It may be mentioned that the protest demanding the removal of Prof Pandey ended after an agreement was signed between the MU community and the HRD Ministry on August 23.
