Sit-ins flay move to extend Art 371(A) in state

IMPHAL,3rd Sep: Denouncing Centre's reported move for extension of Article 371(A) and other divisive policies of the Government of India, sit-in protests were staged at various places from Wahengbam Leikai to Langjing Achouba on Monday.

Wahengbam Leikai Meira Paibi Lup organised a sit-in protest opposing move to extend Art 371(A) or any other similar Acts at Wahengbam Leikai Yumjao Lairembi community hall here on Monday. The protesters held various placards inscribed with slogans like “No Sixth Schedule in Manipur”, “No ethnic division in Manipur”, etc.

Sit-ins were also staged at Sagolband Salam Leikai and Sagolband Meino Leirak by the local women organisations decrying extension of Art 371(A) or any other similar acts and any attempts to destroy the territorial integrity of the state.

Meanwhile, similar sit-in protests were staged by local Meira Paibis at Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Leikai Mamang and Maning area; Sagolband Moirang Leirak Apunba Meira Paibi Lup at Sagolband Moirang Leirak Community Hall and locals Meira Paibis at Sagolband Ingudam Leirak and Sagolband Tera Keithel opposing extension of Art 371(A) or other similar ethnic based policy and 6th Schedule to Manipur.

On the other hand, Takyel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup organised sit-in protest at Takyel Kolom Leikai. Members and volunteers of Western Star Club, Lamjing Meira Club and Yaipha Lamjing Club Women Welfare Association jointly staged a sit-in at Langjing Achouba against extension of Art 371(A), 6th Schedule and ethnic division in Manipur.

At Yairipok Singa, Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) in association with Singa Development Association (SDA) and Singa Ideal Club (SIC) organised sit-in protest against extension of Article 371A or similar act and implementation of 6th Schedule in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, SDA general secretary Md Firoz Khan informed that Meitei-Pangal community will never accept disintegration of Manipur or imposition of any provisions that might affect interest of the state while finalising the Framework Agreement.

Demanding disclosure of contents of the agreement, he also warned of the public resorting to the demand of pre-merger status if the Centre continues to threaten the integrity, unity and interest of Manipur. Later, the protesters blocked Imphal-Yairipok highway and shouted slogans.
