Amid chaos rape accused Tombisana sent to jail till Sep 18

IMPHAL,4th Sep: Abujam Tombisana, the owner of a boarding cum coaching centre at Samurou Awang Leikai, who has been accused of raping a minor girl student staying at his boarding centre, was on Tuesday produced before the Special Court POCSO Imphal West in Cheirap Court which sent him to judicial custody till September 18.

Meanwhile, chaos broke out at Cheirap Court as enraged locals from the victim’s locality tried to get their hands on the accused person. Abujam Tombisana (45), s/o (L) AbujamThambal of SamurouAwangLeikai allegedly raped a`15-year old girl who had been staying in the Boarding cum Coaching Centre for HSLC preparation on March 13 this year at around 3.30 am. Tombisana reportedly threatened the minor girl against disclosing the matter if she wanted to pass the examination.

However, the girl told her parents everything about the incident on August 28, following which a complaint was filed at Wangoi Police station. The police later arrested Tombisana and produced him before the Duty Officer on August 29, before being remanded to police custody. On September 1, the accused was produced before the Special Court POCSO Imphal West at Cheirap Court during which infuriated family members and locals had also tried to assault the accused person.

The same day, medico legal examination of the rape victim was conducted at RIMS Forensic Science (Rape) and statements of the victim recorded as per CrPC section 164. The IO of the case told the Court that Tombisana had confessed to the crime and prayed for remand of four days in police custody for further interrogation. The Court accepted the prayer and remanded Tombisana to police custody till September 4.

On Tuesday, Tombisana was produced before the Special Court POCSO Imphal West, wherein the IO told the Court that after further questioning, Tombisana revealed that he had repeatedly outraged modesty of the victim at his Boarding since 2017 and in March 2018, he committed two penetrative sexual assaults on the victim. The accused then threatened the victim not to disclose the crime to anyone, warning that he (Tombisana) would use black arts/magic to ruin her life and make her insane, apart from threatening to fail her in the HSLC examinations.

The IO further told the Court that when the people of Tombisana’s locality (Samurou Awang Leikai) were questioned about the accused, they conveyed that he always had a despicable character. As Tombisana’s crime against the minor is of grievous nature, the IO appealed to the Court to upgrade the case to Section 6 of POCSO Act and urged that the rape accused be jailed for 15 days till September 18 so as to conduct a more detailed investigation. The Court accepted the request and ordered Tombisana be jailed till September 18.

Meanwhile, after learning that Tombisana was to be produced in the court, enraged people from the victim’s locality stormed the premises of the court and tried to attack the accused. However, police personnel were able to contain the situation and prevented any unwanted incidents from happening.

Later, when Tombisana was brought out from the Court, some of the women protesters tried to attack the accused while the police were hauling him into a bulletproof police vehicle. When the vehicle tried to leave the area, the protesters swarmed the vehicle and prevented it from leaving. Women police teams were called in to disperse the protesters, following which a brief scuffle broke out. As the women police personnel present were unable to tame the crowd, male police personnel also joined in clearing the road block, thus leading to an intense scuffle between the two sides. One protester even climbed on top of the bulletproof vehicle and tried to attack Tombisana. However, police finally managed to control the crowd and send the police vehicle on its way. The enraged people later shouted various slogans that demanded stringent form of punishment to Tombisana.
