Worried Governor bats for preserving traditional values
IMPHAL,10th Sep: Expressing concern over younger generation getting infatuated with western culture and lifestyles, Governor Dr Najma Heptulla stressed the importance of blending modern day education system with preservation of traditional culture and values.
Speaking as chief guest during presentation of Governor’s Award 2018 and Rajkumari Sanatombi Devi Award 2018 at Asha-Jina Complex, North AOC here on Monday, Dr Heptulla lamented that youngsters seem unimpressed with the fact that Manipur is blessed with a rich cultural heritage.
In-spite of being richly endowed with aesthetic and artistic values, the younger generation have been clamouring for western lifestyle, she noted and opined that further degeneration of culture and traditions of the state could be checked in case studies on Manipuri art and culture and traditional crafts are included in school curriculum.
Education, said Dr Heptulla, should not be limited to possessing certificates of excellence and preparing for employment only but needs to be accorded importance in producing responsible citizens of the future and to help the present generation uphold traditional values inherited from forefathers.
She also emphasised on mutual respect to improve teacher-pupil relationship while cautioning that education will not serve any purpose in case teachers are bereft from professionalism and students do not value lessons they are learning within the four walls of schools and college.
