IMPHAL,4th Oct: Demanding immediate release of the arrested students and teachers along with withdrawal of the FIR filed against them as well as removal of security forces from Manipur University and expediting the enquiry against vice-chancellor Prof AP Pandey; students of various departments of the University staged sit-in protests in front of their respective departments on Thursday. Meanwhile, students of various schools located along Imphal-Moreh road protested over the same issue by forming human chains in front of their respective schools.

On Thursday, students of MU chemistry and statistics departments staged sit-in protests demanding restoration of normalcy in the varsity so as to enable them to study in peace and immediate release of the arrested students and teachers, without any condition whatsoever. During the sit-ins, the students held placards inscribed with slogans that they will skip examinations till normalcy returns, removal of security personnel from MU campus, withdrawal of the FIR, abstention from arbitrary suspension of teachers and staff, etc.

Speaking on the sidelines, Thoudam Jharitarani, a student of Chemistry Department, condemned the raid at the university on September 20 midnight and demanded immediate release of the arrested students and teachers without any conditions.

Recalling the assurances given by VC in-charge Professor K Yugindro to Manipur University Working Women’s Association (MUWWA) that relevant process will be initiated for withdrawal of the FIR, Jharitarani questioned why the assurances have not yet been translated into action. She then urged Professor K Yugindro to stand by his words and bring back normalcy in the varsity, while cautioning that the VC in-charge would be solely responsible if the careers of students are affected due to chaos resulting from his dilly-dallying tactics.

On the other hand, demanding immediate release of the arrested members of MU community, removal of security forces from the university campus, speeding up the enquiry against AP Pandey and withdrawal of the disciplinary action against members of MUTA and MUSU; students of various schools, under the aegis of AMSU, MSF, DESAM, SUK, KSA and AIMS, have been protesting by forming human chains since Wednesday.
