Dr A Santa appointed regular RIMS director

IMPHAL, 6th Oct: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an order appointing Dr A Santa as the regular director of Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), Imphal. Dr Santa was appointed to the post by appointment committee of the cabinet of the Ministry’s NE section on September 5 and the appointment order was issued by under secretary DD Maheshwari. Dr Santa had earlier served at North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (NEIGRIMS), Shillong.

Speaking to media persons Saturday, Dr A Santa informed that RIMS would be soon developed as a super speciality hospital and plans are afoot for constructing a building with 500-bed capacity. However, developing RIMS at par with AIIMS requires political involvement and support from the public. According to Dr Santa, RIMS has been without a regular director since August 2014 and the post has been held by in-charge for four years since the tenure of Dr Sekharjit. After prolonged pending case at court regarding appointment of regular director, the Supreme Court intervened and issued a directive to appoint regular director in May and July. Accordingly, advertisement for recruitment of regular director was made and interview conducted, he said, adding that his appointment was made by the Ministry based on the interview results.

Dr Santa also said that his first priority will be patient care system and the hospital need update equipment to run intensive care units and operation theatres. Requisite infrastructure of the RIMS Dental college and Nursing College would also be developed as also roads within the campus. Dr Santa further said that number of patients visiting the hospital has increased as around 64,000 patients visited the hospital till August this year. The the number of patients who visited the hospital till September last year was around 34,000 only, he informed.
