Jarnail assures to release arrested persons

IMPHAL14th Oct: The newly appointed Administrator of Manipur University, ex-chief secretary Jarnail Singh has given assurances that efforts are underway to ensure unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers of the university by Monday.
He gave the assurances during a meeting held with members of MUSU, MUTA and MUSA at the VIP Guest House located inside 2nd MR campus on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, MUSU president Mayanglambam Dayaman informed that members of MUSU, MUTA and MUSA met the High Court appointed MU administrator Jarnail Singh to restore normalcy in the varsity. During the meeting, the administrator confided that efforts are underway to release the arrested students and teachers, stating that he (Jarnail) had met Prof K Yugindro on Saturday in connection with the FIR filed by the latter.
Dayaman further conveyed that administrator Jarnail Singh had stated that he had discussion with Imphal West district Superintendent of Police regarding withdrawal of security forces from the University campus as well.
Describing the meeting as fruitful and positive on account of the number of security forces deployed in the campus decreased considerably, Dayaman, however, noted that presence of uniformed personnel is still quite noticeable in the varsity.
It may be mentioned here that on Saturday, secretary to the CM N Geoffrey had invited the leaders of six student bodies, namely AMSU, DESAM, SUK, AIMS, KSA and MSF, for holding talks with the Chief Minister regarding the restoration of normalcy in MU. As per the advice of administrator Jarnail Singh, members of MU community also attended the meeting. However, the talk failed to break the stalemate as no decision could be taken regarding the unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers.
Earlier, MU community had refused to hold talks with the government on October 12, reiterating their demands for unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers and withdrawal of the FIR lodged against them. However, they agreed to attend the meeting on Saturday as per the advice of the administrator.
Meanwhile, Administrator Jarnail Singh conveyed that efforts are being made from his side for the release of the arrested members of MU community by Monday and that he had spoken to the SP concerned for pulling out security forces from the varsity. He also said that he had spoken to Professor Yugindro with regard to the FIR and added that the ex VC in-charge had assured of withdrawing the same.
