Rally taken out to demand safe land of churches
IMPHAL, 24th Oct: Christians under the aegis of All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) carried out a rally on Wednesday demanding inclusion of churches in the government’s policy for regularisation of land allotment for religious structures and buildings. The rally was flagged off from THAU ground Thangmeiband and culminated at the starting point after passing through Khoyathong, North AOC and Chingmeirong Khongnang Ani Karak.
According to AMCO president S Prim Vaiphei, the state government issued a notification in October 2011 for regularising land allotment to 188 religious structures or buildings. Stating that the notification was as per instruction of the Supreme Court, he noted that 70 worship places in Imphal West were included for the land reguralisation process but none of the existing churches figured in the list.
In the meantime, the government recently served notice for eviction of Lamphel Baptist Church, which has existed since 1973, and Rongmei Baptist Church. Terming the action as discriminatory, he demanded the government to include the two churches in the list of approved worship places of the district. AMCO and Imphal West Churches Forum had submitted a memorandum to the chief minister in this regard on Tuesday.
