BJP demands Congress apology over Guv rant
IMPHAL, 26th Oct: BJP Manipur Pradesh has demanded the Congress party to tender public apology for demeaning the office of the Governor.
Reacting to reports about senior Congress leader Gaikhangam questioning wisdom of Governor Dr Najma Heptulla recently felicitating chief minister N Biren on the latter’s ranking as the third best chief minister as per the India Today poll, BJP spokesman Ch Bijoy contended that Gaikhangam’s statement is bereft of leadership quality.
Speaking to newspersons at party’s Canchipur office on Friday, Bijoy opined that the Congress party’s bid to paint Raj Bhavan in political colours as well as belittling achievement of the chief minister is a classic case of utter frustration on part of the political organisation remaining powerless after years of political domination.
Though Gaikhangam’s inclusion in the Congress Working Committee suggests that he is an important figure for the party, his outlandish remarks against the Governor has laid bare that the Congress’ principle is centred on negativism and averse to endorsing feats of others, he said.
Reminding the Congress leader that offices of the Governor and the President are neutral and there is no justification in questioning their integrity, Bijoy continued that Dr Heptulla has been one of the most accommodative Governors Manipur has ever had.
The fact that ordinary citizens and organisational representatives could conveniently access Raj Bhavan and air their grievances leave no doubt that Dr Heptulla never discriminates on political considerations.
Though it is obvious that the Congress party will not be amused with achievement of chief minister N Biren, a senior leader like Gaikhangam mocking the BJP and office of the Governor based on some unfounded report over Biren’s feat is unwarranted and malicious, he said.
As the India Today poll authenticated various people-friendly programmes initiated by the government of Manipur under the leadership of N Biren such an achievement merits appreciation and encouragement from all sections of the society, Bijoy maintained and expressed that the Congress party would have been applauded by the masses in case suave politicians like Gaikhangam provided constructive suggestions to bring socio-economic development in Manipur.
Referring to clarification issued by the India Today that Biren’s position as the third most popular remains unchanged till the sixth edition of the on-going poll, he stated that the Congress party jumping to conclusion without going through details of the polls is outrageous and tantamount to challenging the public mandate given to the BJP.
Though N Biren was associated with the Congress party in the past his cherished dream to serve the people of Manipur could not be realised due to lukewarm response of Congress leaders, Bijoy claimed and expressed elation that after taking over as the chief minister Biren has been tireless working to bring positive change in the state, developmentally and for social stability.
While Manipur used to be known for achievements by its cultural artistes and sportspersons the India Today poll recognising N Biren as the best chief minister of BJP-rule states is confirmation about his dedicated service to the masses, the spokesman maintained.
Launch of various schemes to cater to health issues and uplift of socio-economic condition of the underprivileged section of the society suggest that serving the poorest of the poor has been Biren’s cherished objective, Bijoy noted and expressed confidence that the chief minister’s initiatives will reap dividends sooner than later.
The Congress party has no right to question achievement of the chief minister or the Governor’s integrity when one of its leaders is facing charges of arms theft and supplying the same to unlawful organisations which are indulging in anti-social activities, Bijoy asserted.
Joining the media briefing, BJP state treasurer Robin Blackie remarked that the Congress party raising hue and cry over report is on expected line as chief minister Biren’s achievement is certain to cause embarrassment to the Congress leaders, who never cared to work for the people.
Some Congress leaders are frustrated over such a feat as they fear that their political career would end without the masses’ blessing, he said and alleged that N Biren could not translate his desires into action mainly due to the senior Congress leaders posing as the stumbling blocks.
