CBI chief removed for defying BJP diktat: Ibobi
IMPHAL, 26th Oct: As part of the nationwide protest of AICC, Congress MLAs and MPCC members staged a sit-in protest in front of CBI office Imphal on Friday against the removal of CBI director Alok Verma.
Speaking on the occasion, opposition leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi alleged the NDA government of sacking the CBI director for his refusal to cover up scams involving NDA government while condemning the nature of BJP government.
He said that removal of CBI director is not in the power of the Prime Minister. As per provisions of the Constitution of India, this should be the decision of a team comprising Prime Minister, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and an opposition leader that too after proper enquiry.
Giving leave to the CBI director at midnight is a violation of constitution, illegal and authoritarian nature of the NDA government and Congress party strongly oppose such actions, he added.
Ibobi also accused BJP of misusing investigative agencies of the country like NIA, ED and others to target opposition members and for taking up actions against those, who refuse to follow their whims. Such misuse of power and targeting the important agencies by the NDA government has rendered democracy meaningless. Such party has no right to rule the country, he said while demanding immediate resignation of the Prime Minister.
AICC secretary (Manipur in-charge) Charles Pyngrope, who also participated in the protest, said that removing the CBI director hastily at midnight has raised several questions against the NDA government. He also termed the act as a violation of the constitution and tarnishing the image of democracy. Former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, Congress MLAs and MPCC office bearers participated in the protest, which was followed by a brief march.
