UNLF involved in Nagamapal attack: Police
IMPHAL, 30th Oct: The grenade attack on CRPF on October 20 night at Nagamapal road was carried out by cadres of the banned outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF). The culprits including National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO) president who planned and executed the attack have been apprehended along with fire arms, announced Imphal West District Police SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam.
The arrested persons are NIPCO president Oinam Premjit (42), son of late O Ibomcha, his wife Oinam (O) Khongjalakpam Pinki (33) of Oinam Awang Leikai; NIPCO secretary Sahabuddin Chesaba (39), son of late Rahamatullah of Phoubakchao; Khaidem Sana (42), son of K Babu of Nongren Maning Leikai but presently staying in a rented house at Nagamapal Lamabam Leikai and Yumlembam Milan (34) son of late Y Manihar of Nongren Maning Leikai. The police also recovered a 9mm pistol with two live rounds, two .38 pistols with 15 rounds, eight mobile phones, Rs 44,500 in cash, a Honda Activa used in the attack and some incriminatory documents from their possession.
Addressing newspersons at his conference hall Tuesday, Jogeshchandra informed that after the attack on the convoy truck of CRPF which killed one jawan and injured another at Nagamapal, City Police Station registered a case and started investigation.
During the investigation, sources revealed that some people involved in the case are staying at Nagamapal Lamabam Leikai area. Consequently, a police team under his and additional SP (Ops) Th Krishnatombi’s supervision, led by DSP (Ops) Amarjit Lamabam, DSP (CDO) Moirangthem Amit, DSP (CDO) Irom Rojit, Commando OC inspector P Achouba and IO of the case SDPO (Imphal) Yumnam Joyraj raided the said area on October 28, he added.
The SP recalled that during the operation conducted around 10.30 pm, Sana was arrested from his rented quarter and he admitted of involvement in the attack on CRPF. Sana also revealed that it was carried out under the instruction of UNLF’s self-styled major Umakanta.
Acting on his confession, Premjit and Pinki were apprehended from their residence with the assistance of Nambol police station OC inspector K Chandrashekhar while Sahabuddin and Milan were arrested on October 29, he said.
Jogeshchandra further stated that in connection with the case, police raided NIPCO office at Keishampat on October 29 during which Rs 44,500 in cash and many incriminating documents were seized. The accused on further interrogation confessed that the attack was carried out as per order of major Umakanta. The attack was planned by Premjit who also provided the grenade while Milan drove the Honda Activa and Sana lobbed the grenade.
Meanwhile, out of the five arrested by the police, Premjit, Pinki, Sahabuddin and Sana were produced before the court on October 29 and remanded to six days police custody for further investigation. Milan was produced in the court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody for five days.
