AICC leaders pledge to block CAB in RS
IMPHAL 2nd Feb: The State Congress Legislature Party (CLP) team which is currently camping in the national capital reportedly got assurance from Congress leader and opposition leader in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad that every possible effort would be made to defeat the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (CAB) in the Rajya Sabha.
Informing this during a press conference held through video conferencing Saturday, CLP leader and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh said that the state CLP met AICC leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad and apprised them about growing concerns of people of Manipur and other North East states following passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Lok Sabha. Apart from informing about widespread agitations being launched in region since the passage of CAB, AICC leaders were also urged to block the Bill in the Rajya Sabha under any circumstances in collusion with other like-minded parties. After patient hearing, Ghulam Nabi Azad assured the CLP team that every possible effort would be made to block the Bill in the Rajya Sabha by meeting MPs of different parties like Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samajwadi Party, DMK, AITC and MPs of North East region, Ibobi informed media persons, adding the CLP team will further meet leaders of different political parties.
He further informed that CLP team would meet AICC treasurer Ahmed Patel and opposition leader in Lok Sabha Malik Arjun Kharge apart from Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in the next few days. If necessary, the CLP team might camp further at Delhi till the end of Parliament seesion and keep strict vigil, he added.
CAB is not in the Business List of the ongoing Rajya Sabha session which will conclude on February 13 but strict vigil is needed as NDA government is unpredictable. Apart from this, CAB and Triple Talaq Bills are two key agenda listed in BJP’s election manifesto and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself indicated passage of CAB in the Rajya Sabha during an election rally in West Bengal Saturday.
In his address on the opening day of the ongoing Parliament session, President Ram Nath Kovind too spoke about passage of CAB in the Rajya Sabha. Hence, Congress party has no faith in the present government, he added. Congress party has been opposing the Bill based on religious and community lines since initial phase but BJP government passed the same in the Lok Sabha and making all out effort to pass the same in the Rajya Sabha inspite of intense protest in the North East, Ibobi said.
Ibobi further informed that MPCC president TN Haokip, CWC member of AICC Gaikhangam, MLAs Ak MIrabai, Govindas Konthoujam, N Loken, K Meghachandra, D Korungthang, Fajur Rahim, Th Lokeswar, DD Thaisii and Md Abdul Nasir are currently camping in New Delhi.
