NISA down SSU to reach CC Meet quarters

CHRONICLE BUREAU
IMPHAL, 18th Mar: NISA knocked SSU out of the 61st CC Meet and set up a quarterfinal clash with defending champions NEROCA FC as the football event completed its 22nd match on Monday.
The Imphal West side outdid their East opponents 5-3 on penalties after they were held to a 1-1 tie by the latter just before the end of added time.
The win will see NISA battle it out against holders NEROCA for a semifinal spot on March 25.
NISA proved themselves the better side in the initial stages as their efforts yielded result in a matter of 20 minutes and they took the lead, keeping their 1-0 advantage intact almost the entire match.
It was Johny Kom who broke the opposition defence to stroke home the goal in the 21st minute.
With NISA gaining the upper hand, SSU fought hard and mounted a flurry of attacks but it appeared they lacked cutting edge inside opponents’ end zone. And the Imphal East side needed injury time to make good use of their labours as N Sushil fired home the equaliser in the dying seconds (90+1).
In the shootout, NISA held on to their nerves to make all their five shots count courtesy of Rojen, Clinton, James, Lamjingba and Gouro, while SSU came up short having managed to convert only three shots taken by Prikanta, Bishorjit and Kabiraj.
