Govt ready to inaugurate sports university

STAFF REPORTER/DIPR IMPHAL, 11th Oct: Chief Minister N Biren said that preparations have been almost completed for inauguration of the country’s first national sports university in Imphal and the government is waiting for confirmation of the schedule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit for the same.

The Chief Minister along with YAS commissioner H Deelep, YAS director N Praveen and other department officials inspected the ongoing repair work being taken up at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal on Wednesday.

During the inspection, the CM visited the temporary office of Sports University situated at the office building of Manipur Olympic Association, Khuman Lampak.

Informing that he is satisfied with the work progress for the Sports University, the CM said that everything is almost ready for the inauguration.

Biren further said that the Main Stadium ground is being developed into an international standard football field with natural grass and it would be completed before the commencement of I-league tournament next month. 

Mentioning that proper quality should be maintained for the repairing, he urged the media to act as a watchdog and monitor the ongoing works being taken up by officials.

Flood light system would also be installed in the Main Stadium and Hockey Stadium soon, he added.

The state government is planning to develop three playgrounds, one each in Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal district, along with laying astro turf (artificial grass) soon so that players could play football round the season, the CM said, adding that he has already directed the officials concerned to prepare a Detailed Project Report in this regard.

Under the Khelo India scheme, a national programme for development of sports, every block in the state would have a playground to develop sporting culture among youths, he assured.
