Bomb scare briefly leads to highway closure

STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 3rd Nov: Security personnel initiated a temporary shutdown of Imphal-Moreh highway on Friday morning at about 5 following a bomb scare near Lilong Bridge under Lilong police station.

Sources said that sniffer dog of a patrol party of the 6 Assam Rifles signalled an alarm after it sniffed and sat down near a pothole along the roadside. Immediately, the highway was sealed off to prevent unwanted consequences.

Later bomb disposal squad of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles went there and checked the spot with protective suits on. However, they could not find any explosive material or device in the area. Subsequently normal traffic along the highway was resumed.

On the other-hand, at least 13 persons were picked for verification during a search operation conducted by Imphal West district police at Naorem Leikai Liwa road under Singjamei police station on Friday.

The operation which commenced from 5am was led by SDPO Singjamei and assisted by DSP (CDO), CO Singjamei police and Imphal West police commando team.

Around 600 people of the area including 220 women were verified one-by-one during the search and 13 individuals who did not possess identification documents were handed over to Singjamei police station for further verification.
