STAFF REPORTER IMPHAL, 13th Nov: At least two riflemen of 18 Assam Rifles were killed and six others injured when an IED exploded Monday at Mahamani village under Chandel police station in Chandel district.
The blast occurred at about 6.15 am when some personnel of 18 AR stationed at Mahamani village were on morning jogging, sources said, adding that the IED was planted around 500 metres from the main gate of the battalion headquarters and 50 metres from battalion’s fenced area on the hilly side.
The IED exploded just when some personnel reached the spot after the Road Opening Patrol of the AR battalion crossed the area, sources said, adding that the blast occurred when some 20/30 riflemen were on jogging as usual between first gate and second gate of the battalion.
Riflemen Inder Singh and Sohan Lal died instantly at the spot while six other riflemen suffered injuries.
The injured riflemen identified as S Sarkar, N Shyam Kumar, Tirendra Nath Das, Ram Govind Singh, Nirmal Roy and Lalnunpuia were evacuated by a chopper and admitted to 183 military hospital, Leimakhong for medical treatment.
Immediately after the blast, top officers of the AR battalion and Chandel district police rushed to the spot and inspected site of the blast.
Bomb experts opined that the bomb could be IED fitted with timer.
Chandel police station has registered a case and corpses of the two deceased personnel deposited at JNIMS mortuary for post mortem examination.
Sources further informed that troops of 18 AR cordoned off villages in the area immediately after the blast and no one was allowed to enter the blast site while keeping strict vigil on movement of people.
Shops and business establishments along Chandel DC road were closed for the day.
