Groom among 7 killed in accidents at Thoubal, Tamenglong

A groom returning from ‘Mangani Chakkouba’ was among seven people killed in two separate road mishaps occurred Saturday at different places of the state.
While five people including the groom identified as Maisnam Meghachandra, son of Sanatomba of Khekman Maning Leikai died in the first accident which occurred near Somendrosana Higher Secondary School, Thoubal Kshetri Leikai along Imphal-Moreh road, one person died in another accident that occurred along NH-37 road near Awangkhul village under Noney police station.
According to eyewitnesses, the first accident occurred at about 2 pm when a Chevrolet UVA car (MN-05-A-7065) in which the groom and his six friends were returning home after attending ‘Mangani Chakkouba’ at his wife’s residence at Wangkhem collided with a mini-truck (Tata 407) bearing registration No MN-04-9801 coming from opposite direction.
Friends of the groom who lost their lives are identified as Thongam Jupiter, son of Ingocha of Khekman; Md Apik, son of Md Kadir of Keibung; Ashem Amujao, son of Ibopishak of Khekman; Maibam Prabin son of M Kumar of Khekman and Mutum Malemnganba, son of Mukundo of Thoubal Ningombam.
Immediately after the accident, locals rushed to the site and extricated the injured persons from the car but Meghachandra (groom), Jupiter, Apik and Amujao died at the spot while injured Premkumar, Malemnganba and Prabin were given first aid at Thoubal district hospital before being referred to Shija hospital as their conditions deteriorated. While Prabin died on the way to Shija hospitals, Malemnganba succumbed to injuries after brief treatment at the same hospital.
The condition of the seventh occupant of the ill-fated car and lone survivor Okram Premkumar, son of Noren of Thoubal Okram is also said to be critical. Thoubal police has registered a case regarding the accident and started an investigation but driver of the mini-truck is absconding.
On the other-hand, one person died at the spot while another sustained injuries in a road accident that took place around 11.10 am Saturday near Awangkhul under Noney Police Station along the stretch of NH-37 (Imphal - Jiri Road).
The accident took place when two brothers travelling in a car fell down a deep gorge as the steering failed after hitting a boulder.
The deceased brother has been identified as Dingchabou Meijulak (28) s/o Tathonang Mejiulak of Lengmai village, Tamei, Tamenglong district while the injured younger sibling identified as Kaliuhabou Meijiulak (26) is said to be in a serious condition. At present, Kaliuhabou has been referred to Imphal for further medical treatment after he was given first aid at Noney PHC. Both the deceased and the injured brothers were evacuated by personnel of 14 Sikh Regiment and taken to Noney PHC. The deceased was working as assistant manager of SBI, Silchar. Both brothers were coming from Silchar toward Imphal when the mishap occured.
