MU students protest 'callousness' of dean

Students of Manipur University (MU) Friday staged protest against Dean of the university and locked down his office alleging the Dean of ignoring their plights. However, the students withdrew their stir after intervention by vice-chancellor professor Adya Prasad Pandey.

According to some students, the election of Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) was conducted on December 20 and the result declared the same day. One Longjam Nilakanta of Koubru hostel won the election for secretary of games and sports. On the night of December 20, some unknown persons came at the hostel and ransacked the room and belongings of Nilakanta.
Luckily, Nilakanta was not in his room that night and he escaped possible unwanted consequences, they reported.

Following the incident, students lodged a complaint to the dean appealing him to find out the identity of those responsible for ransacking the rooms and properties of Nilakanta.

Amid such situation, supporters of other MUSU secretaries organised a Thabal Chongba inside varsity campus celebrating their victory in the election.

Reacting against the event at a time when there is threat to the life of an elected secretary, the students voiced resentment against the alleged incompetency of the dean failure to check unwanted incidents inside the campus as well as for allowing the boisterous celebration.

Later, some representatives of the agitating students met vice-chancellor of the university professor Adya Prasad Pandey. During the meeting, the VC assured to arrange security for Longjam Nilakanta if there is any threat, repairing of his hostel room, adequate compensation for his loss of properties, security deployment in the university hostel, lodge an FIR to investigate the incident and ouster of outsiders from the university hostel. The students subsequently withdrew their agitation.
