Govt rolls out Imphal-Chandel public transport service

In sync with the announcement by chief minister N Biren during his last visit to Chandel district for starting public transport system, chief secretary RR Rashmi on Monday formally launched the Imphal-Chandel passenger bus service under the Manipur State Transport (MST).

The chief secretary flagged off the first fleet of MST bus service to Chandel district from the Dewlahland complex of Inter State Bus Terminus on the New Year day in the presence of commissioner (transport) M Lakshmikumar, transport director in-charge BK Sharma and other department officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Rashmi informed that launch of the public transport system is aimed at providing convenient and affordable means of transport to the people.

Along with improving surface connectivity from the state capital to all district headquarters, the government is working to start chopper service in the interior areas, he said.

The bureaucrat also conveyed that the bus service is testimony about the CM keeping his words and commitment of the government to address genuine issues besetting the public within short notice.

Rashmi also stated that improving the transport system is being accorded top priority by the government.

Expressing confidence that the public transport system will not only facilitate convenient movement of the people but also help improve the local economy to some extent, he also called upon the people of Chandel district to extend cooperation in the government’s initiative to bring uniform development in the state.

In his address, commissioner (transport) Lakshmikumar conveyed that Chandel district administration took a major role in the realisation of the public transport service.

While informing that 16 MST buses have started operation along different routes, especially in the hill districts, he confided that MST service between Imphal and Tamenglong district headquarters will also be launched soon.

On proposal by the Chandel district administration to start special bus service for transportation of government employees working in the district, the transport commissioner assured to positively consider the proposal.

Meanwhile, Chandel district administration accorded warm welcome to the Chandel-Imphal Express service as soon as the passenger carrier reached Japhou Bazar, Chandel on Monday.

According to our correspondent, a simple ceremony was specifically organised to receive the bus with the Chandel district’s deputy commissioner Krishna Kumar leading a team comprising ADC Chandel CEO TS Kothar, top police officials, village chiefs and the public.

The bus left Chandel for Imphal around 1.20 pm.
