Man accused of raping housewife in 2015 found shot dead

Amidst reports of accused rapists being shot dead or attempt being made to eliminate them by unknown armed assailants, a 33-year old man, who was allegedly involved in raping a 27-year old woman way back in 2015, was found shot dead at Lamdeng Khunou under Lamsang Police on Thursday.

The deceased man has been identified as Laiphrakpam Sananingthem, son of Inaobi of Lamdeng Makha Leikai.

According to police sources, the victim, a bamboo seller by profession, was found shot dead by unidentified assailants at the intersection of Lamdeng Khunou, Lamdeng and Lamdeng Khundi villages at about 10.30 on Thursday morning. The victim was coming home, carrying bamboos in his own jeep (MZ-01B 4125).

The body was found inside the victim's vehicle. Police recovered 6 empty shells, of which one was found inside the victim's jeep and five others on the ground. The body bored 6 gunshot wounds, one each at his right leg and right arm and 4 on both his abdomen and chest.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Imphal West District SP rushed to the spot. A forensic team also arrived at the scene and examined the crime scene, after which the corpse was transferred to RIMS morgue for post mortem examination.

It may be mentioned here that the deceased had been accused of raping a 27-year old woman, wife of a chowkidar of a private school in Lamdeng Khunou on April 26 of 2015. An FIR had also been registered against him under 447/354/376/511 IPC by Imphal West Women police station in connection with the case.

It may also be recalled here that in similar cases, one S Brojen of Sairem Khul who had been accused of raping a 3-year old girl in 2017 was allegedly shot at by unknown assailants, while one Irom Bobo of Tharoijam Maning Leikai, accused of raping an 11-year old girl, was gunned down.
